Mold Care & Maintenance Guide

Our premium platinum-cure silicone molds are handcrafted to capture fine details and provide reliable performance through repeated use. Proper cleaning, demolding, and storage will help preserve your mold’s shape, texture, and finish for as long as possible.

1. Cleaning Your Mold

Wash gently:
After each use, wash the mold with warm water and mild dish soap.

Avoid abrasive materials:
Use your fingertips or a soft, non-abrasive sponge. Never use scrub brushes, scouring pads, sharp tools, solvents, or harsh cleaning chemicals, as they may scratch or damage the silicone surface.

Remove dust and lint:
For light dust, glitter, or small particles, gently dab the surface with low-tack painter’s tape. Avoid strongly adhesive tape, which may leave residue or place unnecessary stress on delicate details.

Allow the mold to dry completely before storing it.

2. Demolding and Heat Safety

Allow the resin to cure fully:
Always follow the resin manufacturer’s recommended curing time. Removing a casting too early may distort the piece, damage delicate details, or reduce the mold’s glossy finish.

Demold gently:
Slowly peel the silicone away from the casting rather than pulling or forcing the resin piece out. Take extra care around deep cavities, thin edges, and detailed textures.

Never use an open flame directly on the mold:
Torches and excessive heat can permanently damage silicone, reduce its shine, and cause resin to bond to the mold.

If you use a heat gun, follow your resin manufacturer’s instructions. Use the lowest effective setting, keep the tool moving, and avoid prolonged heat exposure in one area.

Tips for Reducing Bubbles

Mix the resin slowly and thoroughly.

Pour in a thin, controlled stream.

Allow mixed resin to rest briefly before pouring, if recommended by the manufacturer.

Warm sealed resin bottles in a lukewarm water bath only if permitted by the resin manufacturer. Dry the bottles completely before opening to prevent moisture from entering the resin.

Use a pressure pot or vacuum chamber only with compatible resin and equipment.

A light mist of isopropyl alcohol may help release surface bubbles with some resin systems, but it is not suitable for every formula. Always check the resin manufacturer’s instructions and test first. Isopropyl alcohol is flammable—never combine it with a torch, flame, or active heat source.

3. Mold Release

A mold-release product is not always necessary, but it may help extend the life of molds used for deep, complex, or highly detailed castings.

Use only a release agent specifically designed for silicone molds and your chosen casting material. Apply a thin, even layer and test it first, as some products may affect the final surface or reduce a high-gloss finish.

4. Storage and Handling

Store flat:
Always place the mold on a clean, flat, level surface. Folding, bending, or storing it unevenly may cause permanent warping.

Do not stack heavy objects on top:
Pressure may distort the mold or damage detailed textures.

Protect it from sunlight and heat:
Store the mold in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, UV exposure, heaters, and other heat sources.

Keep it dust-free:
Once completely clean and dry, store the mold inside a zip-top bag or covered container. Large molds should remain fully supported and flat during storage.

5. Preserving the Finish

All silicone molds naturally experience wear with repeated use, especially when used with epoxy resin.

To preserve the surface and glossy finish:

Always allow resin to cure completely before demolding.

Avoid sharp tools, fingernails, and excessive pulling.

Do not use abrasive cleaners or scrubbers.

Limit exposure to excessive heat.

Clean the mold promptly and store it properly after use.

The lifespan of a mold varies depending on the casting material, resin formula, pigments, additives, heat exposure, casting depth, and demolding technique.
